to ensure that humanity continues to have a habitable home world,
and even if we wanted to venture out into space,
ecology is necessary.

It is necessary, however, to go beyond the discipline's focus, both of object and of intent...

For one, to consider the human interaction with the world more strongly,
not trying only to deal with the natural world without human impact, but
connecting human ways of making a living and the "economy of nature",
the impact of our ways of life and the way in which we want to live...

Secondly, to focus not only on ever-better analysis of the problems,
but to also provide visions and ideas for solutions and better futures.

an integrative discipline and approach that scientifically considers how
human survival, development, and indeed happiness are connected with
our need for healthy, functioning ecosystems and also emotional connectedness.
